Who We Are

Our Mission

The Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee’s (ALSWCC) mission is to provide service, leadership, education, and assistance to all citizens for the wise use, conservation and development of Alabama’s natural resources.

Our Vision

ALSWCC’s vision is an Alabama with productive communities, healthy soils, clean air and water, abundant wildlife, and regenerative farms and forests.

What We Do

  • Support Soil and Water Conservation Districts in local conservation efforts.
  • Coordinate programs to conserve Alabama’s natural resources.
  • Secure the cooperation and financial assistance of federal partners.
  • Educate all Alabamians about the importance of conservation.
  • Implement programs that increase on-the-ground conservation efforts.
  • Promote conservation practices that prevent erosion, protect water quality, improve forest health and address wildlife issues.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts

Alabama’s SWCDs are local units of government that work to conserve and protect natural resources—especially soil and water—on private lands. There are 67 districts, one in each Alabama county, and each is governed by a five-member appointed board of supervisors SWCDs.

  • Promote conservation practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, erosion control and herd health.
  • Assist landowners and farmers in accessing USDA conservation programs often through NRCS partnerships.
  • Support youth education through programs like land judging, forestry field days, and in-school education activities.
  • Serve as a local voice for conservation, ensuring that federal and state programs meet local needs.
